Hofrichter wins Freestyle State Championship, Kielcheski finishes on podium In Greco-Roman

The Wisconsin Wrestling Federation held their annual state championships for the Olympic styles of wrestling this past weekend at the Alliant Energy Center in Madison. Seven members of the Antigo Wrestling Club competed in hopes of qualifying for the Wisconsin national team and a trip to Fargo in July.

Earning her second trip to nationals in as many years was Olivia Hofrichter, who picked up her second state championship in dominant fashion.

In the quarterfinal round, Hofrichter would face Ashlynn Eckerman of Sarbacker Wrestling Academy. Hofrichter would need only 11 seconds to get on the board, sprawling on a shot attempt by Eckerman and using a Ramsey Roll to score 2 exposure points. 19 seconds later, Hofrichter would add 4 additional points with a chest wrap suplex. Hofrichter would finish the match at the 48 second mark, using an overhook for a collar crusher, and earning the 10-0 technical fall. Eckerman would win the rest of her matches on the day, finishing in third place.

In the semi-finals, Hofrichter would face Isabella Giza of McDonell. Hofrichter would once again score first, using a far hip lock to force Giza into exposure at the midpoint of the period. Hofrichter would increase her lead to 4-0 later in the first period by using a strong crossface to earn a takedown off of a Giza shot attempt. Hofrichter would finish the period with a gutwrench, taking a 6-0 lead into the second period.

Hofrichter would use another sprawl and crossface to counter a Giza shot attempt, earning the takedown 23 seconds into the second period. Hofrichter would then use a gutwrench to earn the 10-0 technical fall 39 seconds into the second period.

In the finals, Hofrichter would compete with Emersyn Miller of Poynette. Miller would score first with an armspin for the takedown at the beginning of the match. Hofrichter would come back strong, using an over/under to set up a lateral for 4 points, earning the pinfall victory in the process at the 51 second mark.

The victory gave Hofrichter the second state championship of her career, and a spot on the Wisconsin national team that will compete in Indiana in the National Duals and in Fargo at the individual national tournament.

Nolan Kielcheski would compete in both Freestyle and Greco, and have success in both. In Greco, Kielcheski would pick up 4 victories, concluding with a victory in the 5th place match for a spot on the podium.

Competing in Freestyle first, Kielcheski would have a first-round match against Braedyn Nally of Sarbacker Wrestling Academy. Kielcheski wasted no time, needing only 16 seconds to lock up a double underhook body lock and toss Nally to his back for 4. Nally’s coaches would challenge the call, and after video review, the call was confirmed, giving Kielcheski an additional point. Kielcheski would sprawl heavy on a Nally shot and use a front headlock to earn a takedown. From here, Kielcheski would lock up a cradle, earning the pinfall victory at 69 seconds of the first period.

In the second round, Kielcheski would face Connor O’Donnell of Askren Wrestling Academy. O’Donnell was able to secure the initial takedown, and then use a trapped arm gutwrench for 4 turns, earning a technical fall victory.

In the consolations, Kielcheski would meet Jaden Kuehl of Mukwonago. Kuehl was able to secure a single leg to take the 2-0 lead 19 seconds into the match. Kielcheski would counter with an overhook and collar tie, leading to a Georgian lateral, earning 4 points and eventually, the victory by pinfall at the 58 second mark.

Kielcheski would face Finn Grauwels of Middleton next. The only scoring of the first period came from a 360 spin to a double leg off of a Russian tie by Grauwels, earning the Middleton wrestler a 2-0 lead.

Grauwels would add another takedown with a single leg, before a reversal without exposure earned Kielcheski a point. Kielcheski would score a takedown with a single leg with 29 seconds remaining, cutting the Grauwels lead to 4-3. A last second takedown attempt by Kielcheski didn’t work, leading to a takedown for Grauwels, and a 6-3 victory for the Middleton wrestler.

Up first for Kielcheski in Greco was supposed to be Isaiah Guerrero of Askren Wrestling Academy, but Guerrero did not show up for the match, and thus, Kielcheski won by forfeit. In the quarterfinals, Kielcheski matched up with Kenneth Vaughn Jr. of Kenosha Indian Trail. Kielcheski would score first, using double overhooks to toss Vaughn to his back, earning the Antigo wrestler 4 points. Vaughn would earn 4 points of his own with a bodylock counter to a throw attempt by Kielcheski. Kielcheski and Vaughn would exchange pushout points, ending the first period deadlocked at 5.

Vaughn would start the scoring in the second period with a pushout point a minute into the period. Kielcheski would earn two points on an armspin attempt when Vaughn committed a leg foul attempting to stop the technique. Vaughn would end the match with a pair of pushout points, giving the Kenosha wrestler an 8-7 victory.

Kielcheski’s first match in the consolations was Maximilion Gehring of Slinger. Gehring would score first with a pushout point, and then added a takedown countering a throw attempt by Kielcheski. Kielcheski was able to maintain the lock from the throw, reverse position, and earn 2 exposure points himself. Kielcheski would then pin Gehring with that same lock at the 2:04 mark.

Kielcheski would face Finn Grauwels of Middleton in his next match. The first scoring of the match was a passivity call against Grauwels for blocking with his head, giving Kielcheski a point. Grauwels would go on a little run, scoring a takedown with a bodylock, and then using a trapped arm gutwrench to earn 3 turns, building a quick 8-1 lead. Kielcheski would finish the period strong, using an armdrag to get to the body for a takedown, and then adding a side headlock, leading to an 8-5 Grauwels lead at the end of the period.

Kielcheski would score first in the second period with a pushout point, and then forced another passivity call on Grauwels, tying the score at 8. Kielcheski would score on another armdrag to the body for a takedown a minute into the period. Grauwels would tie the score with a headlock, but Kielcheski rolled through with exposure to give the Antigo wrestler a pair of points. A late step out point for Grauwels wasn’t enough for the Middleton wrestler, with Kielcheski earning a hard fought 12-11 victory.

In the consolation semi-finals, Kielcheski would face Dylan Muehlenberg. After a minute of handfighting, Muehlenberg was able to secure an over/under bodylock, securing the takedown and earning the pinfall victory at 1:34.

The fifth-place match was a rematch between Kielcheski and Kenneth Vaughn Jr. Kielcheski, motivated by the outcome of the earlier match, came out strong, earning a pushout point 27 seconds into the match. Kielcheski would then hit a double overhook throw, earning 4 points at the 80 second mark. Vaughn was able to show great determination in not getting pinned, but it wasn’t enough to get off his back, with Kielcheski earning the pinfall victory at 1:56.

Competing in Freestyle was Joseph Stimac. Stimac’s first match was against Blake Brickl of Sarbacker Wrestling. Brickl was able to earn a 10-0 technical fall victory.

Stimac’s second match was against Braden Peterson of LaCrosse. Stimac was able to score first, countering a Gator roll attempt by Peterson for the initial 2 points 18 seconds into the match. At the midpoint of the match, Stimac was able to force a passivity call on Peterson, putting Peterson on the shot clock. While on the clock, Stimac was able to hit a headthrow from the feet, earning him 4 points. While attempting to pin Peterson, the shot clock expired, giving Stimac another point. Stimac would then add another turn before going out of bounds. The match would end with 11 seconds left in the first period with Stimac scoring from short offense for a takedown, taking an 11-0 technical fall victory.

Stimac would end his day with a loss to Calvin Arentz of LaCrosse.

Samson Smith would compete in both Greco and Freestyle. The highlight for Smith’s tournament was a second-round matchup with Cashten Hoffman of the Wrestling Factory. Smith was able to get on the board early, needing only 10 seconds to lock up a pair of overhooks and toss Hoffman for 4. Hoffman would then secure a reversal for a point. Hoffman would counter a headlock attempt by Smith for a takedown, and then added a pair of leg laces to take a 7-4 lead. Smith would secure another 4-point throw, once again with a pair of overhooks. Smith would use double overhooks to secure a takedown for the third time with 68 seconds remaining in the match. Smith would end the match with a 4-point headlock, earning the pinfall victory at 2:10.

Also competing during the weekend were Caleb Stimac (Freestyle), Gryphon Beer (Freestyle), and Michael Hofrichter (Freestyle and Greco).

Up next for some members of the Antigo Wrestling Club will be the Northern Plains Regional Qualifier in Rochester, Minnesota this upcoming weekend. This tournament is another opportunity to qualify for nationals, as well as an opportunity to compete with the best wrestlers from nearby states.
