Spring sports begins as area track teams open with indoor meets

The high school Spring sports season kicked off Thursday, as both the Antigo Red Robins and Wittenberg-Birnamwood Chargers track and field teams opened the indoor portion of their schedules, with both competing at the Northland Pines Invitational in Eagle River, while the Antigo boys split their athletes between Eagle River and the UW-Oshkosh Small Schools Invite.

In the Northland Pines Invitational, Wittenberg-Birnamwood took second overall on the girls’ side with 149.5 points, just 5 ½ behind first place Northland Pines.  Antigo placed seventh with 34 points.

Top finishers for the Lady Chargers included Faith Resch, who took first in the high jump and 200 meter hurdles.  Nora Bushman was first in the 800 meter run and second in the 1600; her teammate Kylee Beversdorf finished right behind her, with a second place showing in the 800; London Metropulos was second in the high jump; Kelsie Davis took second in the shot put; while third place finishes belonged to Davis in the 55 meter hurdles, Kaydence Burclaw in the shot put; and Harper Rogowski in the 400 meter run.

The Witt-Birn girls had plenty of success in relays as well, with the 4×800 and 4×400 teams taking first, while the 4×200 team ended in third place.

The Antigo girls were paced by back-to-back State long jump champion MacKenzie Wissbroecker.  The senior began her quest for a third straight crown by taking first with a leap of 17’ 6.5”.  Wissbroecker was a triple winner on the night, also claiming the top spot in the triple jump and the 55 meter dash.

On the boys side, Antigo placed seventh with 22 team points, with Wittenberg-Birnamwood 10th.  Host Northland Pines also claimed the top spot for the boys.

Antigo was led by Jacob Adamski, who took third in both the 1600 meter and 800 meter runs.  The Wittenberg-Birnamwood boys’ best finish was courtesy of Landon Schmidt, who placed second in the shot put.

Antigo’s contingent at the UW-Oshkosh Small Schools Invite was led by long distance specialist James Meade, who was third in the Division Two portion of both the 1600 and 3200 meter runs.  Antigo was 28th in the big 42-team field, with Horicon claiming first.

The Antigo girls will head to Oshkosh for the girls’ event on Tuesday, while both the boys and girls will compete in the Lakeland Indoor Invite on March 23rd.

The Wittenberg-Birnamwood boys are at the Marshfield Invite Tuesday, while the girls head to Marshfield Thursday.
