The Antigo Red Robin football team will look to keep its momentum going into the 2017 WIAA football playoffs as they host the Merrill Bluejays in the annual “War on 64” at Schofield Stadium to close out the regular season.
The Robins clinched the outright Great Northern Conference championship by virtue of its 21-14 victory over Mosinee last Friday night and got some help from Medford who knocked off Merrill last week 28-7 eliminating Merrill from title contention.
Antigo enters the contest with a 5-0 conference mark and 7-1 overall while Merrill is 3-2 in the GNC and 4-4 overall. The Bluejays boast the top ranked offense in the GNC rolling up an average of 372 yards per game while giving up just 222 per contest defensively, good for 3rd in the conference. Antigo comes in 3rd in the Great Northern averaging 317 yards per game while giving up just 153 yards per contest, good for 2nd in the GNC.
Although the conference may already be decided each team will be looking to help its own cause come Saturday’s playoff seeding meetings with a victory tonight. The WIAA will be releasing the official list of playoff qualifiers by midnight tonight with regional groupings being released at approximately 1:30 am Saturday morning. Regional seeding meetings will take place Saturday morning with playoff match-ups being announced Saturday afternoon.
Other games around the GNC include Ashland at Medford, with the winner becoming playoff eligible and the loser being eliminated from playoff contention. Rhinelander will host Lakeland in the “Northwoods Axe” game while Mosinee travels to Thom Field to take on Wausau East in a non-conference contest.
