Incidents of the so called “grandma scam” are ramping up as students head off on spring break trips. The Lincoln County Sheriff’s Department says it happened to a Tomahawk woman. She got a phone call from someone claiming to be a grandchild, saying something has happened to them on spring break, and asking for money via a pre-paid card to get them out of trouble. That’s the typical scam according to Lincoln County Sheriff Jeff Jaeger. Jaeger says grandparents should establish a code word with their grandkids in case of a true emergency.
